RAINBOWS MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN

"Before RAINBOWS, the only one who listened to me was my teddy bear," said a six-year-old participant in RAINBOWS, a support group for children who are grieving from a life-altering crisis such as death, separation, divorce or other painful transitions.

An international nonprofit organization, RAINBOWS was started in Chicago 23 years ago. Since then more than one million children have participated in RAINBOWS programs in 49 of the United States and in 13 other countries from Australia to Austria, Scotland to Singapore.

The programs, while not counseling or therapy, offer grieving children the opportunity to heal by having children with similar experiences participate in 10 to 12 week small group sessions led by trained facilitators. Children can continue to participate in the program for as long as they and their parents feel they can benefit from them.

In the spring of 2005, NCJW brought RAINBOWS to the Linda and Rudy Slucker Center for Women. To date nearly 80 children, ranging in age from 5 to 14 years old, have participated in the program.

Caring adult volunteers who have been trained as facilitators lead the RAINBOWS support groups. Confidentiality is fostered at the outset by both the facilitators and the children.
