Why Volunteer with The Center for Women (CFW)
Are you retired or find you have more free time and would like to connect in a meaningful way with others through volunteering? Are you a college student and need to fill a certain amount of hours for a credit? The CFW has multiple opportunities for you to use your skills and mind to help women in need. We also provide training as needed! Our needs change all the time so please call, let us know what you are looking for or what skills you have and we will try to find you a great way to help.
Need more encouragement to volunteer?
See what current CFW volunteers have to say about their volunteer experience.
"I have been blessed and want to make life better for others. Volunteering has made me appreciate the collective work ethic and spirit NCJW women exude. We shoot for the stars and reach our goals and greatest dreams."
"I have dedicated my life to volunteerism. I have emphasized by example and words how important it is to "give." And in return, through NCJW, I have developed many close friendships."
"Through my NCJW TDA experience, I have gotten so much back in terms of self-confidence and a sense of purpose. But the most important "gift" I received from my NCJW volunteer experience in the gift of life-long friendship with other NCJW women."

Teen Dating Abuse Training (TDA)
Created by NCJW, TDA is a comprehensive classroom experience for high school students that helps prevent teens from entering into or remaining in abusive dating relationships. It is a two-day program presented during health class, so volunteers need to be available during the daytime. As a presenter or assistant, you will be trained as to what to say and how to say it. Training is very comprehensive and you will be well prepared for the job!
Assistant Training: Tues., Oct. 5, 10-12 pm.
Presenter Training: Tues., Wed., Thurs., Oct. 26, 27, and 28, 9:30-12 pm.
With CAREER QUEST you can assist our staff in helping married or single women prepare to reenter the workforce. Volunteers are needed to work on resume writing and interviewing skills along with role playing. This is the perfect opportunity for women with strong writing and interpersonal skills.
RAINBOWS is an International Program that fosters emotional healing among children grieving a loss due to death, divorce, separation, abandonment or any other life-altering crisis. We are looking for volunteers to train to become a facilitator, where you will listen to the children in your group while they share their grief story or whatever circumstances led them to their grieving process.
We will be holding an expedited training for women who are either teachers or hold a counseling degree. Training will take place in the fall of 2010. Date TBD.
Current Events Facilitator
NCJW currently runs off-site current event groups in West Orange and South Orange. These are one-hour weekly groups held at the Jewish Federation Senior Housing facilities. Volunteers will be trained to scan their newspapers, radio and/or T.V. for articles or topics they feel might be of interest to this population. The articles could be local, national, or international in scope and should include topics that would generate discussion in almost any area of politics and current events.
Training will take place in the fall of 2010. Date TBD.
The CFW offers weekly WOMEN'S WORKSHOPS, ranging in topics from "Handling Investments During and After a Divorce," to "Organizing Your Life - Get Rid of Clutter." As a volunteer workshop assistant, you will greet guests as they enter the workshop, collect any monies due, hand out and collect forms as well as informational documents (previously assembled). In general you would just be there to assist the speaker or the group. Training will be provided.
Most of our evening workshops are held on Wednesdays from 7 - 9 PM.
Day Workshops are held on Wednesday or Thursday from 1 - 3 PM.
Our Center provides COMPUTER CLASSES in everything from Word to Excel to PowerPoint. We are often in need of volunteers to serve as one-on-one computer tutors for those students who have a more difficult time grasping the computer concepts. If you have experience with Word, Quick Books, or Power Point, this may be the perfect volunteer project for you.
The CAREER CLOSET provides interview and career-appropriate clothing and accessories free of charge to women in need from the NCJW/Essex Center for Women and other social service agencies. When a client comes to the Career Closet, she is assisted by a "personal dresser" in selecting clothing suitable for that all-important job interview and outfits to start her new job with confidence. Each client is given a week’s worth of coordinating outfits. Volunteers are needed to be personal dressers as well as to solicit clothing and accessories from local women's clothing stores. Volunteers must be able to do heavy-lifting and climb a step ladder. An ideal candidate must enjoy a fast-paced environment, be very energetic, and have a reassuring positive attitude when assisting clients.
